Siding is not a skin you staple on the outside of a house. It is the outer layer of an assembly whose only job is to get water back out. The boards you pick matter far less than what happens behind them.

What Actually Keeps the Wall Dry
- The weather-resistive barrier. The layer behind the siding, lapped so water runs down and out rather than into a seam. Lapped the wrong way it channels water into the wall instead.
- Window and door flashing. Head flashing, sill pans and correct integration with the barrier. This is where the majority of wall rot we open up actually started.
- Clearances. Siding held up off roofing, decks and grade. Siding in contact with the ground wicks moisture and fails from the bottom up, and it is one of the most common mistakes we find.
- Penetrations. Every hose bib, light, vent and outlet is a hole in your weather barrier. Each one needs sealing and flashing on purpose.
- Fasteners. Near salt air, corrosion resistance is not an upgrade. The wrong fastener stains the siding and then lets go.
Requirements vary by adopted code edition, manufacturer instruction and jurisdiction. We verify current requirements and follow the manufacturer’s published installation instructions, because installing outside them voids the product warranty.

Detail and trim
Corners, window surrounds, gables and mixed materials all add cut time. A simple rectangle costs less per square foot than a complicated elevation.

Common Questions
Should I replace windows at the same time as siding?
If the windows are anywhere near the end of their life, yes, and it is the single best piece of sequencing advice we give. The siding has to come off to flash windows properly. Doing them together means one set of flashing done correctly and one labor mobilisation. Doing them two years apart means paying to open the same wall twice.
Can you side over the existing siding?
Sometimes it is physically possible. We generally advise against it. Going over the top hides whatever is happening underneath, and it prevents anyone from correcting the flashing and barrier that are the actual reason a wall stays dry. If the goal is a wall that lasts, the old material comes off.
What happens if you find rot?
We stop, photograph it, show you, and price the repair before we proceed. You approve it or you do not. On a home over twenty years old on this coast, we build that conversation into the estimate rather than pretending it will not happen.
Do I need a permit to replace siding?
It depends on scope and jurisdiction. Straight like-for-like replacement is often treated differently than work that involves structural repair or changes to openings. We confirm with the City of Blaine or Whatcom County and pull whatever is required.
How long does a siding job take?
Most houses are a matter of weeks on site depending on size, access and how much repair we find. Material lead time is often the longer part of the calendar. We give you a realistic window and tell you early if it moves.
